Philippiniana Sacra January-April 2024 issue delves on Filipino virtue ethics

Philippiniana Sacra, the official publication of the UST Ecclesiastical Faculties, released its January-April 2024 special issue via its open access website. The journal is indexed by Web of Science.

Guest editor Rev. fr. Nicanor Pier Giorgio R. Austriaco, O.P., SThD, PhD said in his that the essays in this volume ā€œconfirm the intuition that the scholastic framework can help Filipinos better understand how they feel, how they choose, how they think, and how they act.ā€

The articles published in the said issue are the following:

  1. by Eugene Dominic Aboy, O.P. explores the relationship of pag-unawa, the Filipino notion of ā€œunderstandingā€ with Aquinasā€™ discussion of the virtue of mercy.
  2. Wilhelm BoƱon, O.P. presents the dynamic interplay between the Filipino virtue of pakikisĆ”ma and Aquinasā€™ concept of charity within the context of friendship, i.e., amicitia, thus forging a compelling dialogue that uncovers the profound connection between these two virtues.
  3. by Siddharta Chiong, O.P. uses the Thomistic virtue ethics framework to recast kagandahangloĆ³b, which is the disposition to regard the other as a kapwa or shared-self, as a Filipino virtue.
  4. by Marc Adrian de la PeƱa, O.P. studies “utang na loĆ³b” in conversation with St. Thomasā€™ Aquinasā€™ notion of gratia/gratitudine, demonstrating how Aquinas’ notion of gratitude can elucidate ways to avoid the pitfalls of utang na loĆ³b and distinguish circumstances where utang na loĆ³b becomes either a virtue or vice.
  5. by Vince Stanley B. IƱigo, O.P. explores pagpapakabayani in dialogue with the Thomistic account of virtuous anger.
  6. by Ian Joeffrey G. Melendres, O.P. proposes that the virtue of paninindigan must play an integral part of any successful Filipino virtue ethics, aiming to discover that this virtue can fundamentally anchor the Filipino virtues in katotohanan, i.e, truth.
  7. by Julian Christopher Morada, O.P. examines the writings of Thomas Aquinas in Summa Theologiae regarding the virtue of faith.
  8. by Regalado Trota JosƩ presents the documents that show the strong Santo NiƱo devotions in the northernmost towns of the Ilocos and Cagayan provinces.
  9. by Jorge Mojarro explores the life of young Miguel Ayatumo, a Boholano who imitated Christ during his brief life.
  10. , a review by Jose Adriand Emmanuel L. Layug.
  11. , a review by Ritz Darwin P. Resuello.
  12. , a review by Leonard Jay I. Rabuya.
  13. , a review by Blaise D. Ringor.
  14. , a review by Antonio C. Hila.

Philippiniana Sacra editor Rev. fr. Jesus M. Miranda, Jr., O.P., PhD,  said the digital interface “aims to facilitate the fluid curation and circulation of knowledge on ecclesiastical disciplines”.
