The Aquinian, the official student publication of the UST Junior High School, bagged 13 individual awards and claimed spots in the different categories of the 2021 Online Division Schools Press Conference (DSPC 2021) – Secondary Level.

With the theme, “Pahayagang Pangkampus: Kaagapay sa Paghilom at Pagbangon ng Sambayanan”, DSPC 2021 started accepting entries on August 10, 2021, while the awarding ceremony was held on September 10, 2021 via livestream on the Department of Education (DepEd) – Manila Facebook page.


Moreover, The Aquinian was also named the “Top Performing School for the English Category”, “2nd Top Performing School for the Filipino Category”, and “the 2nd Best Performing School in the Secondary Level of the entire Division of Manila”.

For the seventh straight time, the University of Santo Tomas won the coveted School of the Year Award, conferred during the 8th Philippine Student Quill Awards organized by the IABC Philippines, on March 25, 2021 via Youtube livestream.

Through the efforts of students from the Faculty of Arts and Letters and the Institute of Information and Computing Sciences, the Tiger Media Network, as well as the Varsitarian, the official student publication of UST, the University claimed six excellence awards and 15 merit awards.

Assoc. Prof. Herminigildo Ranera, PhD of the was the recipient of the inaugural Best Musical Director award in the first-ever Live Entertainment Arts and Festival (LEAF) Awards, held on February 8, 2020.

Ranera, Principal Conductor of the UST Symphony Orchestra, was recognized for his work as musical director of Noli Me Tangere, the Opera. At the Conservatory, he teaches trombone, conducting, theory, and composition. The three-time winner of the National Music Competition for Young Artists (NAMCYA) has led the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra, California State Long Beach Symphony Orchestra, San Miguel Philharmonic, and Manila Philharmonic.

Christmas isn’t Christmas without music’

In 2016, the UST Museum added Christmas concerts to its yearly exhibition to further set the Christmas mood; the music complimented the artworks made by young Thomasian Artists from the College of Fine Arts and Design installed at the gallery.

“Even the story of Christmas in the Gospel of St. Luke started with music: the angels came down from heaven and they sang Glory to God in the highest,” UST Museum Director Rev. fr. Isidro C. Abano, O.P., SThL-MA said.

The Christmaseum exhibit can be view until January 3, 2019.

Faculty members from the UST National Service Training Program Civic Welfare Training Service and Literacy Training Service (UST NSTP CWTS LTS), together with , Director of and Faculty Adviser and members of UST Mechanical Engineering Society joined the Dumagat-Remontado Indigenous People (IP) of Antipolo City, Rizal in celebrating the Indigenous Peoples’ day held last October 25, 2019 at Barangay San Jose, Antipolo City, Rizal.

With the theme, “Katutubong Dumagat sa Sariling Atin, Katuwang sa Pag-unlad at Hamon sa Panahon”, the activity is aimed to relive the Dumagat-Remontado indigenous community’s rights, culture, and tradition. The celebration commenced with a ritual led by the group’s Kamalan or Council of Elders, Kaksaan, and the seven Gemot or Chieftains. There were exhibit of the Dumagat-Remontado indigenous houses called “punduhan” and traditional song and dance performances and poetry reading participated in by the different indigenous people communities coming from Purok Tayabasan Libis, Sitio Balon, Sitio Paglitaw Apia, Canomay, San Joseph Purok Mainit, and Calawis. Highlighted also in the event is the call of the Dumagat-Remontado IPs to follow the process of acquiring the FPIC or the free, prior, and informed consent in their communities. 

The IP day was also attended by other stakeholders and partner organizations of the indigenous people communities of Antipolo City, Rizal. Sitio San Joseph Purok Mainit is one of the partner communities of the University of Santo Tomas. Among the projects initiated in the community to date were literacy services, children’s rights workshops, disaster risk reduction and management seminars, and construction of the School of Living Traditions by the UST NSTP CWTS LTS, and installation of solar panels and ram pump by the UST .

The activity was organized with the help of the city government of Antipolo through the City Social Welfare and Development Office and DSWD Field Office-4 MCCT in line with the celebration of the National Indigenous People’s Month held every October.

The UST National Service Training Program Civic Welfare Training Service and Literacy Training Service (UST NSTP CWTS LTS) celebrated the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDRR) on October 13, 2019, at the UST Central Laboratory Auditorium, with the UST NSTP Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) seminar.

The UST NSTP CWTS LTS, in partnership with the UST Red Cross Youth Council (RCYC), Philippine Heart Association (PHA) and UST Hospital (USTH) Section of Cardiology, has been conducting a series of DRRM seminars with focus on hands-only Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Basic First Aid to 9,200 NSTP students on selected weekends of September and October.

With the theme “Building Cultures of Disaster Resilience and Emergency Preparedness”, the activity is part of the UST NSTP course, which is aimed at reducing the vulnerability of the students from the risks brought about by human-induced and natural hazards which our country is most susceptible to. It specifically aims to equip NSTP students with basic knowledge, practical skills and attitude required to perform appropriate basic first aid care response to those in need of emergency care.

Present in the program was a former UST NSTP CWTS student from the who shared her reflection about the DRRM program of UST NSTP. Representatives from UST Simbahayan Community Development Office, UST RCYC, PHA/USTH Cardiology Section, Citizen Disaster Response Center (CDRC), Samahang Kamanlalakbay also graced the event and gave their respective solidarity messages to the department. Present as well in the said activity were community and youth leaders of NTA and Kasiglahan Village Rodriguez, Rizal and Dumagat-Remontado community of Sitio San Joseph Purok Mainit, Antipolo City, Rizal wherein NSTP students had their DRRM fieldwork with last year. The IDDRR is called upon by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) and is held every 13th day of October to celebrate “how people and communities around the world are reducing their exposure to disasters and raising awareness about the importance of reigning in the risks that they face.”

Twenty-four Taiwan Youth Ambassadors visited the University of Santo Tomas on August 29, 2019 for a cultural encounter as part of the International Youth Ambassador Exchange (IYAE) Program organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) of the Republic of China (Taiwan). The visit included a campus tour, student interactions, and later that day, cultural performances for the “2019 Taiwan Night” at the UST Paredes Ballroom.

The youth ambassadors were accompanied by Delegation Head Ambassador Chi-ping Chang from the MoFA Department of International Information Services, Deputy Head of Delegation Ms. Chieh Wong, and Delegation Secretary Ms. Chen Yu-Chih.

Gracing the event were Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in the Philippines Representative Ambassador Michael Peiyung Hsu and his spouse Madame Charlotte Yu. Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China (Taiwan) Non-government Organization International Affairs Department Director General Lai Ming-Chi, Philippine Tariff Commission Chairperson Marilou P. Mendoza, Taiwanese Compatriots in the Philippines Honorary President Mr. Hsieh Shih-Ying, Taiwan Association Inc. President Mr. Chiang Fu-Long, TECO Press Division Director Mr. Jerry Chuang, and TECO Executive Assistant to the Representative Mr. Fernando R.F. Wu were also present for the occasion.

After the welcome remarks delivered by UST Office of Public Affairs Director Assoc. Prof. Giovanna V. Fontanilla, Ph.D., TECO Representative Ambassador Michael Peiyung Hsu, in his message, thanked the many people involved in making the third Taiwan Night in UST possible, especially the UST Rector The Delegation Head Ambassador James Chi-ping Chang gave more information on the IYAE Program.

The University of Santo Tomas began its presentations with the performance of the 70-member UST Symphony Orchestra under the baton of , as conductor. The Orchestra performed three songs by National Artists, namely, “Mga Katutubong Awitin” by Lucio San Pedro, “By the Hillside (Tone Poem)” by Antonino Buenaventura, and “Mutya ng Pasig” by Nicanor Abelardo.

Choir of the World Champions The UST Singers, led by Maestro Fidel Gener Calalang, Jr., sang “Cantate Domino” by Josu Elberdin Badiola, “Tuwing Umuulan at Kapiling Ka”, by Ryan Cayabyab, and “Come Alive (The Greatest Showman)” by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul.

The UST Salinggawi Dance Troupe performed “Binasuan” and “Tinikling.”

In turn, the Taiwan Youth Ambassadors staged a 40-minute four-act play titled “Taiwan: An Island of Vitality.” The first act, “Wishes Sent Skyward,” presented the traditional Taiwanese festivals, such as the Lantern, Dragon Boat, Mid-Autumn, and Lunar New Year Festivals, through dances.

The second act, “A Cure for What Ails,” detailed Taiwan’s thriving healthcare industry through a fast-paced diabolo (Chinese yoyo) and hip-hop performance interspersed with images of their medical care, which balances traditional Chinese medicine with Western medical practices.

The third act focused on Taiwan’s farm produce, textile, and technology industry and is named “Quality as an Art Form,” while the fourth and final act, “A Resplendent Island,” introduced Taiwanese folk music, tourist attractions, and cuisine through an energetic dance.

In the morning of the same day, the Youth Ambassadors were given a tour of the University, led by Assoc. Prof. Fontanilla at the historic Arch of the Centuries, assisted by student leaders from the UST Asian Studies Society. 

The students facilitated a tour of the University campus, with a tour under the guidance of its Assistant Director Ar. Carlo Sayco. After lunch, student leaders from the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery interacted with the Youth Ambassadors.

This year, 75 Taiwan Youth Ambassadors were sent to neighboring countries in three groups that visited two countries each, namely, the Philippines and Malaysia; Thailand and India; and Kiribati and the Solomon Islands, as part of the IYAE, with the theme “Youth Diplomacy Brings Taiwan to You.” The University of Santo Tomas has hosted and engaged with the youth ambassadors for the third consecutive year.

alumnus and currently the UST Singers Assistant Musical Director Mark Raeniel Agpasa won first place at the Composition Competition of the 2019 Busan Choral Festival & Competition (BCFC) based in South Korea.

Agpasa’s composition “Jubilate Deo” bested 59 other entries of 55 other applicants from 29 different countries. With a cash prize of $1,000, top prize winning work will be premiered at the 2019 BCFC to be held from October 16 to 19, 2019. The award ceremony will be held on the last day of the Choral Festival. 

The jury who evaluated the final eight submissions were composed of Philippine Madrigal Singers Choir Master Mark Anthony Carpio, Estonian Choral Association President Raul Talmar, American Choral Directors Association Executive Director Tim Sharp, Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre Conservatory Choir Director Vytautas Miškinis, and 20 Trillion Production Korea President Young-Jo Lee.

Agpasa is also the current conductor of the UST Chorus of Arts and Letters.
